About Willis, TX - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Willis, Texas is named after the Willis brothers, who in 1870 donated some land to the Great Northern Railroad to establish a railroad town along the line from Chicago to Houston. The town was publishing its own newspaper by 1875, had several churches and a college by the 1880s, opened three hotels by 1890, and established the Willis State Bank in 1911. In addition to the population boom spurred by the railroad, the town was also the state's leading tobacco growing region by the late 19th century, and had as many as seven cigar factories before the tariff on Cuban tobacco killed the local tobacco boom early in the twentieth century. Willis was also an important center for the local timber industry, which still thrives today.
Today Willis is known as the gateway to Lake Conroe, a man-made lake constructed 5 miles west of town beginning in the late 1960s. Lake Conroe offers recreation activities for all seasons, with boating, swimming and water-skiing being the most popular in the hot Texas summers. Golfers enjoy the warm, pleasant spring and fall weather, while hunters and fishermen appreciate the mild winters. One particularly well-known Willis-based attraction is the Southern Empress, a Victorian riverboat which cruises the lake year-round, offering dining, dancing and live entertainment.
